EPDM rubber (Ethylene Propylene Di-ene Monomer) is an elastomer which is used as an insulator in cold room doors and in the front seals of the industrial respirators, where silicone must be avoided. It is also used in radiators, glass-run channels, as garden hose pipe, belts,electrical insulation, vibrators and solar panel heat collector.
It is also used for collecting rainwater on the roofs (since it doesn’t pollute the rainwater), rubber mechanical goods, electrical cable jointing, as vulcanizations, thermoplastic and many other applications. In the granule form, EPDM Rubber Foam is spread on the surfaces so as to create a non-slip porous safety surface. However the type of material in EPDM in which it is rapidly gaining acknowledgement is the rubber foam. As a sheet, it can be used to cover the roof of houses.
This can serve a dual purpose. Since it is a very good insulator, it will not allow the roof to get heated thereby keeping the house cooler in tropical countries and thus reducing the air-conditioning bill. Secondly, it also helps in waterproofing the roof. EPDM Rubber Foam is available to buy by the meter with thickness as small as 1 mm to 30 mm (or any other thickness as specified by the buyer) and can be supplied according to the user’s requirement.
EPDM foam sheet offers outstanding resistance to heat, ozone and weather. This property of the EPDM finds use in insulating apartments in cold countries. Also the fact that EPDM doesn’t react with oil, gasoline, hydrogenated oils and aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons enables it to be used as kitchen wallpapers and kitchen counter tops. It has unsatisfactory compatibility with concentrated acids; hence, can be used in chemistry labs as covers for counter tops.
Also noteworthy is its non-slip safety surface. Nowadays, mats in gyms usually consist of EPDM rubber foam attached to the regular mat. This provides for a comfortable grip of the feet while exercising. There is a large scope for the sale of EPDM rubber foam in India. In summers North- Central and South India record mean temperatures of 35 degree Celsius and so, people can utilize these foam sheets as insulating material. This rubber foam finds usage in our day to day lives and is thus, an indispensable commodity to be had.
